New Swiftpassage Server

All services now shifted to new system at Durham Server Central

New Swiftpassage Server

Hot processor!

Geeks take note: the server at Swiftpassage is now hosted on a new system here. The new server build and cross-over has been taking place over the past three weeks and more.

The new system is a 64-bit Athlon 3.2 with a gig of RAM running Ubuntu-Gutsy. The former system, an Athlon-XP 2.7ghz with 512meg of RAM running Debian Sarge,  was taken off-line, and shut down yesterday morning.

The change was necessitated by the news that Debian Sarge will be unsupported with security updates after March 31st.

It's  bit silly and sentimental, but the Sarge box, which was called Deb-Server, richly deserves our gratitude, and will be missed as much as anything so thing-ish can be anthropomorphized and missed. Thanks, Deb, for doing your job here so well and for so long!

The new server is called Ubu-Server, and now contains an upgraded SqueezeCenter music server, and eJabber, an updated IRC Chat server, as well as the previous pop-mail, imap web-mail,  and smtp services. The Media Archives, WebCam, and Blog Portal have been migrated over as well.

Some services have a new look, and others are unchanged. The functionality of the Archives was spotty at times during the past week as the movers were carrying the boxes around.  :-)
